Richard Clifford Taylor (born January 28, 1943) is an English musician. He is famous for being the guitarist and founder of the band Pretty Things. Dick Taylor was also one of the first members of the Rolling Stones. He played guitar and bass guitar with them. He left the Rolling Stones to continue his studies at Sidcup Art College. While at college, he started the Pretty Things in September 1963. He played with this band until they stopped performing in 2018. As of 2025, he plays lead guitar for a band called the Hillmans.

Dick Taylor's Music Career
Dick Taylor was born in Dartford, England. He went to Dartford Grammar School. In July 1962, while he was studying at Sidcup Art College, a new band was formed. This band was the Rolling Stones. It was made when Dick Taylor, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards joined with Brian Jones and Ian Stewart.
Playing with the Rolling Stones
At first, Dick Taylor played lead guitar in the Rolling Stones. But then he switched to playing bass guitar. He left the band in November 1962 to go back to art college. Dick Taylor never recorded any songs with the Rolling Stones. Their first song came out in June 1963.
Starting the Pretty Things
In 1963, Dick Taylor started a new band called the Pretty Things. He formed it with singer Phil May. In this band, he played his favorite instrument, the guitar. He left the Pretty Things in 1969 after they released their album S.F. Sorrow. The band made a few more albums without him. They stopped playing together in 1976.
However, the Pretty Things got back together in 1979. Dick Taylor rejoined them to release an album called Cross Talk. He stayed with the Pretty Things until they stopped performing in 2018.
Other Music Projects
Besides his work with the Pretty Things, Dick Taylor also helped produce music for other bands. He helped produce the first album for Hawkwind. He also played guitar on that album. He also helped with the first albums for bands like Cochise and Skin Alley.
In the 1980s, Dick Taylor played guitar with an English band called the Mekons. He also recorded music with Andre Williams in Chicago. As of 2025, he plays lead guitar with a band called the Hillmans. The lead singer of the Hillmans is Tony Minx. The band's name is a nod to the Hillman Minx car.
Dick Taylor's Personal Life
Dick Taylor married his wife, Melissa, on June 14, 1969. As of 2017, he lived on the Isle of Wight in England.
