Playing Football

Starting His Career

In 1978, Phil started playing for the senior Swan Districts team. He quickly became an important player. The club was getting stronger after a tough period.

Winning Championships

Narkle played one more year for Swan Districts. He helped them win another premiership in 1983. This was his second championship with the club. After this win, Phil moved to the St Kilda Saints. At that time, the league was called the VFL.

Time with St Kilda

St Kilda hoped Phil would help their team. However, he faced many injuries. These injuries stopped him from playing his best. He started to show his true skill later in the 1986 season.

Returning Home

In 1987, Phil Narkle moved back to Western Australia. He joined the new West Coast Eagles team. He was chosen for the All Australian Team that year. This is a special team made up of the best players from all clubs.

Before the 1988 season, Phil got an ankle injury. This meant he played only a few games. Later, a serious knee problem caused him to walk with a slight limp. Because of this, the West Coast Eagles let him go.

Back to Swan Districts

Phil returned to Swan Districts in 1989. He played some games in the reserves team first. He also changed his playing position. He moved to the back pocket. This was less demanding than the wing position.

In 1990, the Eagles picked Phil again. He played nine senior games for them. He also played a key role in Swan Districts' grand final win. They beat Claremont that year.

Phil became the captain of Swan Districts in 1992. He continued to play well. Even though he had lost some of his speed, his experience was very valuable. Phil Narkle retired as a player at the end of 1993. He was 32 years old. After retiring, he continued to help the club in other roles.
