Who Was Philemon Sturges?
Philemon Sturges was born in 1929 and passed away in 2005. He studied at Princeton University, a famous school. After finishing his studies, he worked with a company called The Providence Partnership. This company helped design many buildings.
An Architect's Work
Sturges was famous for his building style called Mid-Century Modern. This style uses clean lines and simple shapes. People often praised his buildings because they fit so well with their surroundings. He made sure his designs looked good in the places where they were built.
For example, the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission once said that his Bonanza Bus Terminal was a very beautiful building. They noted it was "particularly well suited to its site." This means it looked perfect in its location. Sadly, this bus terminal was later taken down.
Buildings He Designed
Sturges designed several important buildings. The Post Office in Bristol, Rhode Island is one of them. It was built on the spot where an older house used to be. That house was designed by another famous architect, Russell Warren. Sturges used parts from the old house in his new Post Office design.
Also in Bristol, he designed the Old Stone Bank building. This bank building has special carvings called reliefs on its outside walls. These carvings were made by an artist named Hugh Townley. Today, the Old Stone Bank is a Citizens Bank branch.
Here are some of his notable buildings:
- Bonanza Bus Terminal (1963) in Providence (no longer standing)
- US Post Office (1963) in Bristol
- Old Stone Bank (1965) in Bristol (now Citizens Bank)
- Providence Biltmore Hotel renovations (1979) in Providence
A Children's Book Author
Besides being an architect, Philemon Sturges was also a very busy author. He published his first book in 1995. From then until he passed away in 2005, he wrote almost one new book every year!
He is well-known for the I Love... series published by HarperCollins. These popular books include I Love Trains, I Love Planes, I Love Trucks, I Love Tools, I Love Bugs, and I Love School. Kids loved these books because they were fun and easy to read.
