The Philip Chapin House is a historic home located in the village of Pine Meadow. This village is part of New Hartford, Connecticut. The house was built in 1867 for Philip Chapin, who owned a local factory. It is a beautiful example of the Italianate style of architecture. This special house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

What Does the Philip Chapin House Look Like?
The Philip Chapin House is on the west side of Church Street. It faces a park called Chapin Park. This park is a triangular green space. The house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood. The roof is flat on top. It has a cool little tower called a belvedere. A belvedere is a small room on the roof. It offers great views of the area.
Fancy Italianate Style Details
The outside of the house is covered in wooden clapboards. It has lots of fancy decorations. These decorations are typical of the Italianate style. The roof has wide edges. These edges are held up by decorative brackets. These brackets have small hanging pieces. There is also a band of carved wood along the roofline.
The windows on the second floor are special. Most of them are in pairs. They have rounded tops. A shared rounded hood covers each pair. The window above the front door is round. It has a decorative ledge above it. A porch wraps around the front and left side of the house. It also has many detailed decorations. The inside of the house is just as fancy as the outside.
Who Was Philip Chapin?
The Philip Chapin House was built in 1867. It was made for Philip Chapin. He owned a tool factory in the area. His factory was one of the biggest employers in New Hartford. This means many people worked there. Philip's father, Hermon, started the factory.
Chapin Family's Impact on the Community
Philip did not manage the factory as well as his father. He ended up selling it to his brother. Then he moved away in 1878. Philip's father, Hermon Chapin, was very generous. He gave the land for the nearby park. He also donated land for the churches that stand across from the house.
