Philip Chevron's Musical Journey
Philip Chevron grew up in Santry, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. In the late 1970s, he became the lead singer and co-founder of a punk rock group. This group was called The Radiators from Space. They received good reviews from music critics. However, they did not become widely popular or earn a lot of money.
Joining The Pogues
The Radiators from Space broke up for a short time in 1981. Philip then moved to London. There, he met and became friends with Shane MacGowan. They worked together at a record shop.
After The Pogues released their first album in 1984, Philip was asked to join them. He filled in for their banjo player, Jem Finer, who was on paternity leave. Philip later became a full member of The Pogues.
Songs and Later Work
Philip Chevron wrote several songs for The Pogues. Two of his well-known songs are "Thousands Are Sailing" and "Lorelei." In 2003, he started The Radiators (Plan 9) again. He worked with Cait O'Riordan, who used to be The Pogues' bassist. They released an album called Trouble Pilgrim in 2006.
In his later years, Philip often spoke for The Pogues. He would visit online forums and answer questions from fans. In 2004, he helped update and re-release all of The Pogues' old music on CD. He regularly toured with The Pogues after they reunited in 2001.
Illness and Passing
In June 2007, The Pogues' website announced that Philip had been diagnosed with a type of cancer. In early 2008, the website shared good news. Philip had recovered from his illness. His hearing also improved after his treatment. He went on a tour of the United States in March 2008. During each show, he sang his song "Thousands Are Sailing." By 2009, Philip was free of cancer.
However, in May 2013, the band announced sad news. The cancer had returned, and Philip was very ill. His last public appearance was at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. This was for a fundraiser in August of that year. Philip Chevron passed away on October 8, 2013, in Dublin. He was 56 years old.
