Philip's Early Life and Hockey Career
Philip Doyle went to St. Mary’s Primary School in Banbridge. He attended this school from 1996 to 2004. After that, he went to Banbridge Academy from 2004 to 2011.
Playing Hockey at School
While at Banbridge Academy, Philip was a talented hockey player. He helped his school team win several important cups. These included the Bannister Bowl in 2006 and the Richardson Cup in 2007 and 2008. His team also won the McCullough Cup in 2010. They won the Burney Cup in both 2010 and 2011.
In 2011, Philip's team won the All Ireland Schools Cup. This was a big achievement for them. They even reached the semi-finals of the European Schools Cup that same year.
Representing Ulster and Ireland
Philip also played hockey for Ulster's Under-16 team. He played as a centre back. His team finished second in an inter-provincial tournament. He also represented Ireland's Under-16 team. They competed in the European championships in Holland, finishing in 6th place.
Philip also played for the Banbridge club team. He played as a centre forward during the 2010/2011 season.
Philip's Rowing Journey
Philip Doyle began studying Medicine at Queen's University Belfast in 2012. It was there, in 2013, that he started rowing.
Early Rowing Success
In 2014, Philip won the British University Championships. He was still new to rowing at this time. That same year, he came second in the Novice Irish National Championships. Both of these wins were in the men’s 8+ (eight-person boat) event. He also competed in the European Universities Championships in Hanover in 2014. He finished 8th in the men’s single scull event.
In 2016, Philip won the men’s championship double scull with his partner, Tiernan Oliver. He also won a silver medal in the championship single scull event. Later that year, Philip and Tiernan won a bronze medal in Zagreb. They also finished 9th at the World Universities competition in Poznan, Poland.
Philip took a year to study Medical Sciences in 2015-2016. He earned a first-class honours degree.
Becoming a Senior Rower
Philip made his senior debut for Ireland in Lucerne, Switzerland. He competed in the men’s singles event, finishing 15th. In September 2018, he and his partner, Ronan Byrne, finished 9th in the men’s double in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Philip had just graduated from Queen’s University in July 2018. He put off starting his job as a doctor to focus on rowing.
Philip worked as a doctor at Belfast City Hospital from December 2018 to April 2019. After that, he returned to rowing full-time. He competed at the European Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland, with Ronan Byrne. They finished 9th.
They then won a silver medal at World Cup II in Rotterdam, Netherlands. They came second to the Swiss team. Later, they won another silver medal in Linz, Austria, finishing second to the Chinese team. Their time was 6 minutes and 6.25 seconds.
Olympic Medal Winner
On August 1, 2024, Philip Doyle achieved a huge goal. He won a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He competed in the Men's double sculls final with his new partner, Daire Lynch.
