Early Life and Hockey
Philip Doyle grew up in Northern Ireland. He went to St. Mary’s Primary School from 1996 to 2004. After that, he attended Banbridge Academy from 2004 to 2011.
Playing Hockey
During his time at Banbridge Academy, Philip was a talented hockey player. He helped his school team win several important cups. These included the Bannister Bowl in 2006 and the Richardson Cup in 2007 and 2008. His team also won the McCullough Cup and the Burney Cup in 2010. They won the Burney Cup again in 2011.
In 2011, Philip's team won the All Ireland Schools Cup. They even reached the semi-finals of the European Schools Cup that same year. Philip also played for the Ulster Under-16 team. They finished second in a big tournament. He also represented Ireland's Under-16 team in the European championships in Holland. Philip played for the Banbridge club team as well.
Rowing Career
Philip Doyle started studying Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast in 2012. He began rowing in 2013. He quickly showed talent in the sport.
Early Rowing Success
In 2014, Philip won the British University Championships as a new rower. That same year, he came in second at the Novice Irish National Championships. Both of these wins were in the men’s eight-person boat. He also competed in the European Universities Championships in Germany, finishing eighth in the men’s single scull.
In 2016, Philip won the men’s championship double scull with his partner, Tiernan Oliver. He also won a silver medal in the championship single scull. Later that year, Philip and Tiernan won a bronze medal at the European Universities event in Croatia. They also competed at the World Universities event in Poland.
Becoming a Professional Rower
Philip earned his medical degree from Queen’s University in July 2018. He then started his first job as a doctor in Belfast City Hospital in December 2018. However, he soon decided to focus on rowing full-time.
In 2018, Philip made his senior debut for Ireland in Switzerland. He and his partner, Ronan Byrne, finished ninth in the men’s double sculls at a competition in Bulgaria. In 2019, Philip and Ronan competed at the European Championships in Switzerland, finishing ninth. They then won a silver medal at World Cup II in the Netherlands. They finished second to the Swiss team. Later, they won another silver medal in Austria, coming in second to the Chinese team.
On August 1, 2024, Philip Doyle achieved a major goal. He won a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He competed in the men's double sculls final with his partner, Daire Lynch. This was a huge achievement for him and for Ireland.
