Rowing at the 2024 Summer Olympics facts for kids
Rowing is a sport where athletes race in boats using oars. The rowing events at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place in Paris, France. These exciting races happened from July 27 to August 3, 2024. The competition venue was the Stade nautique de Vaires-sur-Marne, which is a special stadium for water sports in Vaires-sur-Marne.
About 502 rowers from all over the world competed. They raced in fourteen different categories. There were an equal number of events for both men and women. This means there were seven events for men and seven for women. The rowing program for Paris 2024 was very similar to the one at the previous Olympics.

How Rowing Races Work
The rowing competition had fourteen events in total. There were seven events for men and seven for women. Each event used different types of boats. This was the last time that "lightweight rowing" was part of the Olympics. In the future, "coastal rowing" will take its place at the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Types of Rowing
Rowing has two main styles:
- Sweep rowing: In this style, each rower uses only one oar.
- Coxless pairs: Two rowers, no coxswain.
- Coxless fours: Four rowers, no coxswain.
- Eights: Eight rowers, with a coxswain. A coxswain is a person who steers the boat and tells the rowers what to do.
- Sculling: In this style, each rower uses two oars. They hold one oar on each side of the boat.
- Single sculls: One rower in a boat.
- Double sculls: Two rowers in a boat.
- Lightweight double sculls: Two rowers in a boat, but they must be under a certain weight.
- Quadruple sculls: Four rowers in a boat.
How Athletes Qualified
There were 502 spots available for rowers at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This was a few less than at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Countries that qualified could send one boat for each of the fourteen rowing events.
Earning a Spot
The qualification process started at the 2023 World Rowing Championships. This big event took place from September 3 to 10 in Belgrade, Serbia. About two-thirds of all the Olympic spots were given out here. The best-performing crews in each event earned these spots for their countries.
For example, the top nine teams in single sculls got a spot. The top seven in lightweight double sculls, fours, and quadruple sculls also qualified. The top five in eights and the top eleven in pairs and double sculls earned spots too.
Other Ways to Qualify
The remaining spots were given out at special races called "continental qualification regattas." These races happened in different parts of the world, like Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. There was also a final Olympic qualification regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Since France was the host country, they automatically got one spot in the men's and women's single sculls if they hadn't qualified already. Also, four spots were given to countries that needed extra help to compete.
