Philip Lea was a talented English mapmaker, globe creator, and publisher. He lived from around 1660 to 1700. He was known for making and updating many maps. He often worked with other famous mapmakers of his time. Sometimes, he even bought their map plates to create new versions.

A Master Mapmaker and Publisher

Philip Lea was a very busy and important person in the world of maps. He was a cartographer, which means he drew and made maps. He was also a globemaker, creating globes of the Earth and the sky. On top of that, he was an instrument maker, crafting tools for navigation and measurement. Finally, he was a publisher, meaning he printed and sold all these items.

He worked with many other well-known mapmakers. These included Herman Moll, Robert Morden, John Ogilby, and John Seller. Philip Lea often bought their map plates. This allowed him to create new and updated versions of their maps.

Famous Works and Collaborations

Philip Lea created many important maps and globes. Here are some of his notable projects:

  • In 1683, he worked with Robert Morden and William Berry. Together, they made A New Terrestrial Globe. This was a globe of the Earth.
  • In 1687, he teamed up with John Ogilby. They published The Travellers Guide. This was a very good map of England and Wales.
  • Also in 1687, he worked with John Overton. They created A New Mapp of America.
  • In 1693, he revised and re-issued maps by Christopher Saxton. These maps showed The Shires of England and Wales. Shires are like counties or regions.

Where Philip Lea Worked

Philip Lea had several workshops in London.

  • From about 1683 to 1686, he worked at a place called the Atlas & Hercules. This shop was in the Poultry district of London. It was located across from Old Jewry.
  • From 1687 until he passed away, his main shop was also called the Atlas & Hercules. This one was in Cheapside, near Friday Street, London.
  • Between 1689 and 1695, he sometimes had another location. This was at Westminster Hall. It was near the Court of Common Pleas.

His Early Life and Legacy

Philip Lea started his career by becoming an apprentice in 1675. This means he learned his trade from an experienced person. He was part of a group called The Worshipful Company of Weavers. He learned his skills from Robert Morden, who he later collaborated with.

Philip Lea died in the year 1700. After his death, his wife, Ann Lea, took over the business. She continued to run it successfully for another 25 years. This shows how important and well-known their mapmaking business was.
