Philippe Vandevelde, known by his pen name Tome, was a famous Belgian writer of comics. He was born on February 24, 1957, and passed away on October 5, 2019.
Tome was well-known for working with other artists. He teamed up with Janry to create popular series like Spirou et Fantasio and Le Petit Spirou. He also worked with Luc Warnant and later Bruno Gazzotti on the comic series Soda. Earlier in his career, he helped out as an assistant artist for Dupa.
His Life as a Comics Creator
Philippe Vandevelde was born in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. When he was eight years old, he had an operation that made him temporarily blind. During this time, he experienced comics by having stories read aloud to him. These included Adventures of Tintin and Corentin.
From 1972 to 1974, he published his first drawings and comics. He used the pen names "Phil" and "Tom" for his school magazine, Buck. His very first comic was a funny story set in medieval times called Estrel, le troubadour.
Tome began his professional career in the studio of Dupa. Dupa was the creator of the comic series Cubitus. There, Tome met Janry, who would become his long-time partner in creating comics.
After helping other artists like Turk and De Groot on series such as Léonard and Clifton, Tome and Janry started working for the Spirou magazine in 1979. This was a famous Franco-Belgian comics magazine. Their first job there was to create a games page called Jeureka.
In 1980, they began working on Spirou et Fantasio. This was a very famous comic series that had been around for forty years. Many different authors had worked on it before, including the well-known André Franquin. Tome and Janry were given the task of creating new stories for the series, sharing the job with another team of creators, Nic and Cauvin.
Eventually, Tome and Janry became the only team responsible for Spirou et Fantasio. They continued to create stories for the series until 1998, completing 14 comic albums. They also created Le Petit Spirou, which tells stories about Spirou when he was a child. They made 14 albums for this series starting in 1990.
