Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ida Philippine Eleanor Rosa Schick (1893–1970) was a talented German musician. She was a composer, pianist, conductor, and even a university teacher. After she married, her name became Philippine von Waltershausen. She was special because her music was still played in Nazi Germany, which was unusual for female composers at that time.

Her Early Life and Music Journey

Philippine Schick was born in Bonn, Germany, on February 9, 1893. Her father, Josef Schick, was a professor who studied languages. Her mother, Mary Butcher, was from England.

When Philippine was four years old, her family moved to Munich. As a teenager, she loved to create. She wrote short stories and even a play! She also started composing, writing songs (called Lieder) and pieces for the piano.

After finishing high school, she continued to learn. She took private lessons in Greek, Latin, and English. In 1910, she even began studying Chinese writing.

Becoming a Musician

Philippine's father didn't want her to become a musician. But she followed her passion! In 1914, she joined the Munich Conservatory. This was a special school for music and theater.

There, she studied piano with Friedrich Klose. She also learned how to compose music from Hermann Zilcher. She worked hard and finished her composition studies in 1918.

Marriage and Later Life

In 1927, Philippine married Hermann Wolfgang von Waltershausen. They had a daughter named Lore. However, they divorced in 1932. Philippine felt her marriage didn't leave her enough time for her important cultural work.

From 1918 to 1936, Philippine Schick created more than 30 musical works. These included songs, chamber music (for small groups of instruments), choral music (for choirs), and a piano concerto (a piece for piano and orchestra).

Philippine Schick passed away in Munich on January 13, 1970.
