The Dagmar's Frog (Phrynopus dagmarae) is a small frog that belongs to the Strabomantidae family. This special frog lives only in the Andes mountains of Peru. It has been found in the Huánuco Region, specifically in the Pachitea Province and Ambo Province. The name dagmarae was given to honor Dagmar Schramm from Germany.

What Does the Dagmar's Frog Look Like?

Scientists have mostly found female and young Dagmar's Frogs. We don't know much about the males yet. Adult females can grow to be about 27.3 mm (1.07 in) long from their snout to their bottom.

Their head is narrow and short, and their snout (nose area) is short and rounded. They don't have a visible eardrum (called a tympanum). The skin on their back is bumpy. They also have folds of skin along their sides.

The frog's fingers and toes do not have webbing, like a duck's foot. Their fingertips are a little bit swollen.

The color of the Dagmar's Frog can change a lot! Their backs and sides can be many shades of red, brown, or green. For example, they might be cinnamon, grayish, pink, brick red, or even peacock green. Their bellies can also be different colors, like hair brown, lime green, yellow, or even bright orange. Some frogs even have stripes down their back or along their sides.

Where Does the Dagmar's Frog Live?

The Dagmar's Frog lives on land, not in water. It makes its home in cloudy mountain forests and wet areas with shrubs. It used to live in wet grasslands near forests too. These frogs live high up in the mountains, at elevations between 3,070–3,380 m (10,070–11,090 ft) above sea level.

This frog is not very common. One of the biggest dangers to the Dagmar's Frog is farming, especially growing potatoes. These activities can destroy the places where the frogs live. Sadly, this frog is not known to live in any protected areas, like national parks, which would help keep it safe.
