Phyllis Bay facts for kids
Phyllis Bay is a small bay located between Allen and Scarlett Points. You can find it at the southern tip of Montagu Island, which is part of the South Sandwich Islands. A "bight" is a gentle curve or bend in a coastline, forming a wide, open bay.
Discovery and Naming
This area was first roughly mapped by a Russian explorer named Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen between 1819 and 1820. He was leading an expedition that explored the Antarctic region.
Later, in 1930, the bay was properly mapped and charted by a team from the Discovery Investigations. These were British scientific expeditions that explored the Southern Ocean. The team was on board the research ship Discovery II. They named the bay after Phyllis V. Horton. She was the daughter of Lieutenant Commander W.A. Horton, who was the chief engineer on the Discovery II during their survey of the area.
