Phyllis Theodosia Simmons Brooks (born December 21, 1926 – died February 26, 2012) was a Canadian educator. She dedicated her life to teaching and helping people learn.

Phyllis Brooks was born in Bermuda on December 21, 1926. In 1945, she received a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed her to come to Canada to study teaching.

She first worked as a teacher in Bermuda. Later, she married a Canadian and moved back to Canada.

Her Education and Career

Phyllis continued her studies in Canada. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English from the University of Toronto. She also completed a master's degree in education.

For 20 years, Phyllis worked for the Toronto school board. She was a teacher and a librarian, helping students learn and discover books.

Helping Others Learn

Even after she retired from teaching, Phyllis continued to help her community. She volunteered to teach adult literacy courses. These courses helped adults learn to read and write better. She did this for the Toronto District School Board.

Phyllis was also part of the Bermudian Canadian Association. She helped raise money for scholarships. These scholarships helped children pay for music programs through an organization called St. Christopher House in Toronto.

Awards and Recognition

Phyllis Brooks was honored for her important work. She received the Harriet Tubman Award from the Ontario Black History Society. This award recognized her contributions and achievements.

She was also a founding member of the Canadian Negro Women's Association (CANEWA). This group later became known as the Congress of Black Women of Canada.
