The Urich's tyrannulet (Phyllomyias urichi) is a small type of bird. It belongs to the Tyrannidae family, which includes many flycatchers. This bird is special because it is found only in Venezuela. This means it is endemic to that country.

This little bird lives in warm, wet montane forests. These are forests found on mountainsides in tropical areas. Sadly, the Urich's tyrannulet is in danger. Its home is shrinking because of habitat loss, which means its natural living areas are being destroyed.

About Urich's Tyrannulet

Urich's tyrannulet is a very rare bird. For a long time, people hardly ever saw it. It was first seen in 1899. Then, it was spotted again in the 1940s. After that, it wasn't seen until 2005.

A Rare Bird Rediscovered

In May 2021, a team of scientists went on an adventure. They wanted to find the Urich's tyrannulet again. They hoped to prove it was not extinct (gone forever). The place where it was seen in 2005 had lost its trees. Many other possible homes for the bird were also damaged.

But then, they saw a photo on Instagram! The picture showed a thick forest on a mountain near Yucucual, Monagas. This looked like a perfect home for the bird. The team went to this area. They were very successful! They found two different pairs of Urich's tyrannulets. This was the first time anyone had seen the bird in over ten years. It was also the first time clear photos and sound recordings were ever taken of this special bird.

What It Looks Like

The Urich's tyrannulet has an olive-green color. It also has a very sharp, loud call. An expert on birds, David Ascanio, led the team that found the bird again. He said it looked like a "little tiny Shrek" because of its green color.
