Early Life and Art
Pia Guerra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. Her mother was from Finland, and her father was from Chile. When she was 10, her cousin visited and left a comic book, The Uncanny X-Men #129, at her house. After reading it, Pia loved comics and kept reading them.
Pia taught herself how to draw. She was always interested in art, but she first thought about other jobs, like becoming a doctor. In high school, she started going to comic conventions. This made her think about a career in comics. Pia decided not to go to college and instead focused on becoming a comic artist.
Pia Guerra's Career
Early in her career, Pia Guerra did voice-over work. She also worked on many different video games and their instruction manuals. In 1998, she created storyboards for Boeing Employee's Credit Union and Microsoft Studios. Before starting Y: The Last Man, Pia met with writer Brian K. Vaughan in San Diego.
Y: The Last Man
Pia Guerra's first big project was the Vertigo comic series Y: The Last Man. She helped create this series with Brian Vaughan and drew the pictures for it. Pia had worked on other independent comics since the mid-1990s. But Y: The Last Man is known as her "big break" in the comics industry.
Other Comic Work
In 2005, Pia Guerra drew for Marvel's Spider-Man: Unlimited. Later, she worked on a Doctor Who comic called Doctor Who: The Forgotten. This comic was published by IDW Publishing. She also contributed to a Torchwood series for Torchwood Magazine. Pia has also co-written two issues of Simpsons Comics with Ian Boothby.
From 2013 to 2015, she drew five comic book covers. One of these was a special cover for Black Canary.
Editorial Cartoons
In the late 2010s, Pia Guerra started drawing editorial cartoons. These are cartoons that share opinions on current events. She has drawn cartoons for the website The Nib, The Washington Post, and The New Yorker.
After a sad event in February 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, she drew a cartoon. It showed a school staff member, Aaron Feis, who died protecting students. The cartoon showed him being welcomed as a hero in the afterlife. Pia told The Washington Post that she drew it because she felt helpless about such events.
In April 2022, Pia Guerra was one of the artists who contributed to a special book. It was called Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds. This book helped raise money for Ukrainian refugees.
In 2023, Pia Guerra was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. This was in the category for Illustrated Reporting and Commentary.
Personal Life
Pia Guerra lives in Vancouver, Canada. She is married to writer and comedian Ian Boothby. They work together on cartoons for Go Comics, Instagram, and the New Yorker. Since February 2021, they have created a daily comic called Mannequin on the Moon.
