Pia Jasmin Guerra is a talented comic book artist and editorial cartoonist. She was born in America but is also Canadian. Pia is famous for helping create and draw the comic series Y: The Last Man. She has been working in the comics world since the 1990s.

Pia has also drawn for popular comics like Doctor Who, DC Comics, and Marvel Comics. You can often see her cartoons in The New Yorker, MAD Magazine, and The Nib. She also wrote an editorial cartoon book called Me The People.

Pia's Early Life

Pia Guerra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. Her mother was from Finland, and her father was from Chile. When Pia was 10, her cousin visited and left a comic book, The Uncanny X-Men #129, at her house. Pia read it and loved it, becoming a comic fan from then on.

Pia taught herself how to draw. Even though she was always interested in art, she first thought about other jobs, like becoming a doctor. In high school, Pia started going to comic conventions. This made her think more seriously about a career in comics. She decided to focus on becoming a comic artist instead of going to college.

Her Amazing Career

Early in her career, Pia did voice-over work. She also worked on many video games and their instruction manuals. In 1998, she created storyboards for companies like Boeing Employee's Credit Union and Microsoft Studios. Before starting Y: The Last Man, Pia met with writer Brian K. Vaughan in San Diego.

Her first big project was the comic series Y: The Last Man. She co-created this series with Brian Vaughan and drew the pictures. While Pia worked on other independent comics since the mid-1990s, Y: The Last Man was her "big break." It made her well-known in the comics industry.

In 2005, Pia drew for Marvel's Spider-Man: Unlimited. Later, she contributed to a Doctor Who comic called Doctor Who: The Forgotten. She also worked on a Torchwood series. Pia even co-wrote two issues of Simpsons Comics with Ian Boothby.

From 2013 to 2015, she drew five comic book covers. One of these was a special cover for Black Canary.

Becoming an Editorial Cartoonist

In the late 2010s, Pia started drawing editorial cartoons. These are cartoons that share opinions on current events. She drew cartoons for The Nib, The Washington Post, and The New Yorker.

After a sad event in February 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Pia drew a cartoon that was shared by many people online. It showed a school staff member, Aaron Feis, who died protecting students. In her cartoon, he was welcomed as a hero in the afterlife. Pia told The Washington Post that she drew the cartoon because she felt helpless after hearing about the event.

In April 2022, Pia helped with a special book called Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds. This book was made to raise money for Ukrainian refugees. Pia was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2023 for her illustrated reporting and commentary.

Pia's Personal Life

Pia Guerra lives in Vancouver, Canada. She is married to writer and comedian Ian Boothby. They work together on cartoons for Go Comics, Instagram, and the New Yorker. Since February 2021, they have created a daily comic called Mannequin on the Moon.
