Piatt's Landing was a very important spot on the Ohio River in the early 1800s. It was a busy place where riverboats could stop, and people could cross the river using a ferry. This historic landing was located in Boone County, Kentucky, close to Route 338.
The landing and a house called Winnfield Cottage were built by Robert Piatt. He was the grandfather of a famous Civil War General named Edward Canby. The Piatt family owned several ferries that helped people travel across the Ohio River to Indiana. These ferries connected places like Touseytown to Lawrenceburg, Rabbit Hash to Rising Sun, and East Bend to North Landing. Many members of the Piatt family also lived in Norwood, Ohio.
The Piatt Family Story
The name Piatt actually comes from France. It was originally spelled "Piat." The family came from a region in France called Dauphine, near Grenoble.
One of the first Piatts to come to America was Rene Piat LeFleur. He was a Huguenot, which means he was a French Protestant who had to leave France because of his religion. He first went to London in the 1670s and became a British citizen. Later, he moved to Long Island in America. He married an Englishwoman named Elizabeth Sheffield, and they settled in New Jersey. Most people named Piatt in America today are related to Rene Piat LeFleur.
