Picassent is a town in the Valencian Community, Spain. It is part of the Horta Sud area. About 20,000 people live here.

Picassent used to be mostly about farming. But over the last 20 years, it has grown with new industrial areas. It's a great place to live for people who work in the big city of València because it's close enough to commute easily and is more affordable.

Life in Picassent

In the countryside around Picassent, which is quite large, local farmers grow lots of orange trees. Imagine fields full of bright oranges!

The town has different neighborhoods. Many of these areas grew around the three main churches and their squares:

  • San Cristobal is near the town hall square.
  • Milagrosa is close to the market square.
  • L'hermita de la Vallivana is next to the "l'hermita" square.

Picassent has its own underground station called "Picassent" on Line 1. This station connects the town directly to the center of València. The journey usually takes about half an hour.

Fun Festivals

Picassent celebrates two big festivals each year:

  • July 10th: This festival honors "San Cristobal." During this week, there's a special event called "bous al carrer." It's a local version of the famous "San Fermin" festival in Pamplona, with traditional street events.
  • September 8th: This day celebrates "Virgen de la Vallivana." The main day is surrounded by a week of exciting activities. You can enjoy religious parades, concerts with classic and rock music, and amazing fireworks displays.

A Look at History

Picassent is a very old place. People have found ancient items from the Bronze Age here, showing that people lived in this area a very long time ago.

Picassent officially became a 'village' in 1324. Later, in 1364, it came under the control of a person named Pere Boil Colom.

In 1510, less than 400 people lived here, which was about 100 families. The population dropped a lot in 1646 due to a crisis and the removal of some groups of people. Some smaller settlements nearby, like Ninyerola and Espioca, were also lost.

The town didn't start growing again until 1713, when it reached 100 families once more. Since then, it has continued to grow steadily.

The oldest part of the village is known as the "Carrerons," which means "long streets" in the local language. The village even had its own walls until 1820!

Historic Buildings to See

Picassent has some interesting old buildings that are still standing:

  • The Sant Cristofol Church: This church was built between 1712 and 1755 on top of an even older building. It's a beautiful example of the architecture from that time.
  • The Espioca Tower: This tower was built by Muslims in the 11th century. It was used as a lookout point to protect the city of Valencia. The tower has four floors and can be found near the A-7/AP-7 highway.
