Pick and roll facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The pick-and-roll is a super common play in basketball. It's a clever move used by two teammates to trick defenders and score points. One player blocks a defender, and then the other player gets open for a pass or a shot. It's like a secret handshake on the court!

What is a Pick-and-Roll Play?

The pick-and-roll is a basic but powerful offensive strategy. It involves two players working together. One player sets a "pick" (also called a "screen"). This means they stand still to block a defender. The other player, who has the ball, dribbles around this block.

After setting the pick, the first player doesn't just stand there. They quickly "roll" towards the basket. This creates an open space. The player with the ball can then pass to the rolling teammate. Or, they might take a shot themselves if their defender is stuck on the pick.

Why is it Called Pick-and-Roll?

The name tells you exactly what happens!

  • Pick: This is when one player sets a screen. They stand in the way of a defender. This stops the defender from guarding their teammate.
  • Roll: After setting the screen, the player quickly moves towards the basket. They are "rolling" to an open spot. This makes them ready to catch a pass and score.

This play is all about teamwork and timing. It forces the defense to make quick choices. If they make the wrong choice, it can lead to an easy score.

How Does a Pick-and-Roll Work?

Let's break down the steps of a typical pick-and-roll. Imagine two offensive players, Player A (the ball-handler) and Player B (the screener).

Step 1: Setting the Screen

Player B moves towards a defender who is guarding Player A. Player B then stops in front of that defender. They stand still with their feet wide apart. This is the "pick" or "screen." It's important that Player B doesn't move their feet. If they do, it's called an illegal screen, which is a foul.

Step 2: Using the Screen

While Player B sets the screen, Player A dribbles the ball. Player A moves very close to Player B's screen. This forces Player A's defender to either run into Player B or go around them. This creates space for Player A.

Step 3: The Roll (or Pop)

Right after Player A uses the screen, Player B makes their move.

  • The Roll: Most often, Player B will quickly turn and run ("roll") towards the basket. They are looking for a pass from Player A.
  • The Pop: Sometimes, Player B might "pop" out instead. This means they move away from the basket, usually towards the three-point line. This happens if they are a good shooter. They might get an open shot from outside.

Step 4: The Decision

Now, Player A has choices. They can:

  • Pass the ball to Player B (who is rolling to the basket or popping out).
  • Dribble past their defender and take a shot themselves.
  • Pass to another teammate who might be open because the defense is focused on the pick-and-roll.

The success of the play depends on how well the players read the defense.

History and Importance

The pick-and-roll has been around for a long time in basketball. It became very popular in the NBA in the 1990s. Teams started using it more and more. Today, it's one of the most common plays in basketball at all levels.

Why is it So Important?

  • Creates Space: It forces defenders to move. This opens up gaps in the defense.
  • Confuses Defenders: Defenders have to decide quickly. Should they switch who they are guarding? Should they try to go over or under the screen? These decisions are hard to make in a split second.
  • Versatile: It can be used in many ways. Players can roll, pop, or even "slip" the screen (pretend to set a screen but then quickly cut to the basket).
  • Teamwork: It teaches players to work together. Good communication and timing are key.

Many famous basketball players have been masters of the pick-and-roll. It's a fundamental part of modern basketball strategy.
