The Pickett House is the oldest house in Bellingham, Washington. You can find it at 910 Bancroft Street. A man named George Pickett built it in 1856. He was a Captain in the United States Army. Later, he became a famous general in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. This historic house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. This means it's an important building protected for its history.

History of the Pickett House

Captain Pickett came to Bellingham to help build Fort Bellingham. He picked a spot on a hill then called Peabody Hill. This was in the town of Whatcom, which is now part of Bellingham. He had this area cleared to build his home.

The house has two stories. It was built using lumber from a nearby mill. This mill was called the Roeder-Peabody lumber mill. It was located on Whatcom Creek. About a year after the house was built, Captain Pickett's son was born there. His name was James Tilton Pickett.

Captain Pickett left Bellingham in 1861. He went to serve in the Civil War. After he left, the house was owned by different people over the years. In 1936, a woman named Hattie Strothers passed away. She left the house to the Washington State Historical Society.

In 1941, the Pickett House became a museum. Later, it also became home to the Daughters of Pioneers. Both the museum and the Daughters of Pioneers still use the house today.

Changes to the House Over Time

The Pickett House still looks very much like it did when it was first built. Not many changes have been made to the original building.

One change is the staircase. A narrow staircase now leads to the upstairs bedrooms. Before, there was a ladder to get to the second floor. Also, a kitchen has been added to a smaller section of the house. This section is called a lean-to.
