Pico Bonpland is a very tall mountain in Venezuela. It is the third highest peak in the country. This amazing mountain stands 4,883 meters (about 16,020 feet) above the sea. You can find it in the Sierra Nevada de Merida mountain range. This range is part of the Andes mountains in Mérida State, Venezuela.
About Pico Bonpland
Pico Bonpland is a special place. It is named after Aimé Bonpland. He was a French explorer and scientist. Interestingly, Aimé Bonpland never actually visited the Andes mountains in Venezuela. The peak was named in his honor anyway.
A Protected Mountain
Pico Bonpland is part of a very important area. It is protected by the Sierra Nevada National Park. This park helps keep the mountain and its surroundings safe. The park also protects Pico Bonpland's sister peak, Pico Humboldt. Many unique high-altitude grasslands, called páramos, are also protected here.
Glaciers of the Past
For a long time, Pico Bonpland had glaciers. Glaciers are huge sheets of ice that move very slowly. These glaciers formed during a cold period called the Merida glaciation. This was part of the Pleistocene Ice Age. However, by the year 2011, all the glaciers on Pico Bonpland had melted away.
