Piedra Pintada facts for kids
Piedra Pintada (which means "Painted Stone" in Spanish) is a really cool and unique rock formation in northern Uruguay. It's like a giant, colorful sandstone block that stands out from everything around it! This amazing stone is about 19 meters (62 feet) tall and 76 meters (249 feet) around. It's considered a geological wonder because it's so different from the usual rocks in the area.
You can find Piedra Pintada in the Artigas Department, about 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) southeast of the city of Artigas. It's also just 8 kilometers (5 miles) from a road called Ruta 30. This special stone is part of a park known as "Parque Congreso de Abril."

What Makes Piedra Pintada "Painted"?
The name "Piedra Pintada" comes from its unique red and green colors. But it's not painted by people! These colors are actually from different kinds of mosses that grow all over the giant sandstone rock.
Over a very long time, water has slowly worn away parts of the sandstone. However, the top parts of the stone have stronger basalt rocks, which are much harder for water to erode. This mix of basalt and sandstone is what makes Piedra Pintada so special. It shows how the ground in this area is made up of both basalt (which forms the main soil) and sandstone (which is deeper underground).
Fun at Parque Congreso de Abril
Piedra Pintada is a popular spot that attracts many visitors because it's so beautiful and interesting to see. The "Parque Congreso de Abril" opened in 1982 right next to the stone. It's a great place for families and friends to visit!
The park has everything you need for a fun day out or even a camping trip. You'll find:

There's also a small shop (called a cantine) where you can buy snacks, and you can even buy firewood for your barbecue!
