Pieminister facts for kids
Pieminister is a company that makes delicious pies! It started in Bristol, a city in South West England. You can find Pieminister pies in their own restaurants, in big supermarkets, and even buy them online. Many pubs and small food shops across the UK also sell them. As of 2022, Pieminister has restaurants and cafes in several cities, including Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford, Sheffield, and Stoke on Trent.
The Story of Pieminister
Pieminister was started in 2003 by two friends, Jon Simon and Tristan Hogg. They wanted to make really good pies! The company cares about where its ingredients come from. They use meat from animals that are raised freely in Britain. They also use fish that has been caught in a way that helps protect the ocean, which is called Marine Stewardship Council-certified. If you're a vegetarian, you'll be happy to know that all their vegetarian pies are approved by the Vegetarian Society.
Just one year after they opened, Pieminister was invited to sell their pies at London's famous Borough Market. In 2004, they also started selling pies at the huge Glastonbury Festival, a big music event. They went to Glastonbury for ten years! Over time, Pieminister opened many more shops. You can find their shops in places like the Covered Market, Oxford, Trentham Estate, Cardiff, St Nicholas Market, and several spots in London, Manchester, and Liverpool. They even opened a shop in Amsterdam in 2012.
The company has grown a lot! For example, in the year ending March 31, 2018, Bristol Live reported that Pieminister's sales went up by 14%, reaching £14.3 million. That year, they sold over five million pies! They also served 50 tonnes of mashed potatoes and 4,500 litres of gravy in their restaurants.
Helping Others
Pieminister also believes in helping people. In 2013, they started a campaign called "Cattle Drive." They worked with a charity called Send a Cow, which helps families in Africa start their own farms. Pieminister aimed to raise £40,000 to help 30 families. They promised to donate 10 pence for every pie sold in supermarkets that had a small felt cow attached to it.
In 2022, Pieminister supported another important cause. They worked with the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), which is a charity focused on preventing suicide. Pieminister made donations for each sale of their special 'It's All Gravy' pie to help CALM's work.
