The Pierogi Fest is a super fun yearly festival in Whiting, Indiana, USA. It is put on by the Whiting–Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce. The festival is named after the pierogi, which is a yummy Polish dumpling. Lots of people come to this festival, usually more than 250,000 visitors every year!
Festival Fun
The festival happens on the last weekend of July. It takes over 119th Street in downtown Whiting. During the festival, only people can walk on the street. No cars are allowed! You will find many food booths selling pierogi, kielbasa (Polish sausage), and sauerkraut. There is also live music to enjoy and exciting carnival rides. Other cool events include a Polka Parade, fun pierogi tossing games, and eating contests. They even crown a "Mr. Pierogi"!
A Small Disagreement
In 2017, the festival organizers had a small problem. They asked another festival in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania, to change its name. This was because it was also called "Pierogi Festival." The Edwardsville group did not want to pay a fee to use the name. They thought the fee was too high.
But by June 2018, the two groups worked things out. The Edwardsville festival agreed to respect the Whiting festival's name. In return, they got permission to keep their own festival name.
Festival in 2020
The Pierogi Fest did not happen in 2020. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
