Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pierre-Joseph de Castellan was a brave officer in the French Navy. He played a part in the American Revolutionary War, which was a big fight for independence.

A French Navy Officer

Pierre-Joseph de Castellan started his career in the French Navy on 10 April 1748. He began as a Garde-Marine, which was a bit like a naval cadet or junior officer in training.

He worked his way up through the ranks. On 15 January 1762, he became a Lieutenant. Later, on 13 May 1779, he was promoted to Captain. This meant he was in charge of a ship.

Leading Ships in Battle

Captain Castellan commanded a powerful warship called the Auguste. This ship had 80 guns and was very important in battles.

He led the Auguste in two major naval battles. The first was the Battle of the Chesapeake on 5 September 1781. The second was the Battle of the Saintes on 12 April 1782.

In these battles, he served as a flag captain for Louis Antoine de Bougainville. A flag captain was the captain of the ship where the admiral (or a senior commander like Bougainville) was located. This was a very important and trusted role.

Retirement

After a long and distinguished career, Pierre-Joseph de Castellan retired from the Navy. He left on 25 March 1785, holding the rank of Brigadier.
