Early Life and Family
Pierre Bénichou was born in Oran, which was part of French Algeria at the time. His father, André Bénichou, was a philosophy professor. In 1941, during World War II, his father lost his job because he was Jewish. He then opened his own private school.
One of his father's students was the famous writer Albert Camus. Pierre's uncle, Paul Bénichou, was also a well-known historian. In 1949, when Pierre was 11 years old, his family moved to Paris, France.
A Career in Journalism
Pierre Bénichou started his career in journalism. He began as an intern at a newspaper called France Soir. In 1956, he joined France Dimanche, another newspaper.
He became a reporter for Jours de France in 1961. Later, in 1966, he became the editor-in-chief of Le Nouvel Observateur. This magazine was very popular and sold many copies each week.
Radio and Television
Pierre Bénichou became a very familiar voice and face in France. He joined Les Grosses Têtes, a very popular radio show on RTL. He was a regular on this show for many years, which made him a household name.
He also appeared on television. He was a contributor to Vivement Dimanche, a TV show hosted by Michel Drucker. People loved his humor and personality. Many considered him a "historic monument" of French media.
