The Pike River is a stream in Houghton County, Michigan, in the United States. It is about 11.6-mile-long (18.7 km), which is roughly the distance of a long bike ride!

All About the Pike River

The Pike River is a smaller river, but it plays an important role in the local environment. It flows through a beautiful part of Michigan, eventually joining a larger body of water.

Where Does the River Flow?

The Pike River starts in Portage Township. This is where the river's journey begins! From there, it flows towards the northeast. As it travels, the river enters Chassell Township.

Finally, the Pike River empties into Pike Bay. This bay is part of Portage Lake, which is a larger lake system. The river's mouth is close to the small community of Chassell.

Neighboring Rivers

The Pike River isn't alone in this area. To its east, you'll find the Sturgeon River. The Pike River stays fairly close to the Sturgeon River, usually within about 3 miles (5 km) of it. Both of these rivers eventually flow into Portage Lake.

To the west of the Pike River, also about 3 miles (5 km) away, is the North Branch of the Otter River. Interestingly, this part of the Otter River flows in the opposite direction of the Pike River, heading southwest. The North Branch Otter River then joins the main Otter River. The Otter River eventually turns northeast, flows into Otter Lake, and then feeds into the Sturgeon River. It's like a network of waterways all connected!
