Pilar Millán Astray (born in 1879, died in 1949) was a Spanish writer and a person who wrote plays. She was known for her interesting stories and plays. Some new information shows she might have shared information for Germany before World War I. Later, she was put in prison because of her political beliefs. It is also said that the political situation at the time made it difficult for her to continue writing plays.

Her Early Life

Pilar Astray was born in A Coruña, Spain, in 1879. Her parents were José Millán Astray and Pilar Terreros. Her brother, José Millán Astray, was a Spanish general. He also founded the Spanish Legion. Pilar got married and had three children: Javier, Carmen, and Pilar.

Working for Germany

During World War I, Pilar encouraged her three sons to work for Germany in Barcelona. This is according to a historian named Fernando García Sanz. They gathered information, and one important person they watched was the British ambassador to Spain, Sir Arthur Henry Hardinge. A German representative paid for each document they handed over.

Her Writing Career

Pilar's husband passed away in 1919. After this, her career as a writer really took off. In 1919, she won the White and Black prize for her book called La Sister Teresa. She also wrote for several newspapers. These included La Nación, El Espectador, and El Sol.

Writing Plays

A famous writer named Jacinto Benavente encouraged Pilar to write her first play. It was called The Roar of the Lion and came out in 1923. She wrote other plays too, such as La galana and Una chula de cor. One of her plays, La tonta del bote, was a huge hit! It was performed for 310 days straight. The cover of her comedy book, The haberdashery of the red dahlia, has a picture of her painted by Julio Romero de Torres.

Leading a Theater

During the time of the Second Spanish Republic, Pilar Millán Astray was in charge of the Muñoz Seca Theater in Madrid.

Later Life and Imprisonment

Pilar Astray supported the military when they started a conflict in July 1936. Because of her support, she was put in prison in Alicante. Other women, like Rosario Queipo de Llano and Carmen Primo de Rivera, were also in prison with her.

In 1940, she published a book about her time in prison. It was called Imprisoned. 32 months in red prisons. This book included poems about her political and religious beliefs. After her imprisonment, she stopped writing plays. Some people believe this was because the political situation at the time made it difficult for her to continue. Her health was affected by being in prison. She passed away in 1949 in Madrid. This happened while she was taking part in an event honoring an actress named Josita Hernán.

Her Plays as Films

In 1970, one of her plays, The Complete Idiot, was made into a movie. This was a new version of an older film with the same name from 1939.
