María del Pilar del Río Sánchez (born on March 15, 1950) is a Spanish journalist, writer, and translator. She is also the president of the José Saramago Foundation, an organization that promotes culture and the work of her late husband, Nobel Prize winner José Saramago.

About Pilar del Río
Pilar del Río was born in Castril, a town in the Granada region of Spain, in 1950. Her parents were Antonio and Carmen, and she was the oldest of fifteen children!
Her Career in Journalism
Before becoming a well-known translator and foundation president, Pilar del Río worked as a journalist. She reported for important Spanish TV channels like TVE and Canal Sur in Seville. This experience helped her develop strong communication skills.
Meeting José Saramago
In 1986, Pilar del Río met the famous Portuguese writer José Saramago. She had already read all of his books that were translated into Spanish and admired his work. Two years later, in 1988, they got married.
They first lived in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Later, in 1993, they moved to Lanzarote, one of the beautiful Spanish Canary Islands. Pilar del Río lived with José Saramago until he passed away in 2010.
A Dedicated Translator
Pilar del Río played a very important role in sharing José Saramago's stories with the Spanish-speaking world. She translated many of his books from Portuguese into Spanish. This helped millions of readers enjoy his amazing novels. After her husband's death in 2010, Pilar del Río also became a Portuguese citizen.
Leading the José Saramago Foundation
Today, Pilar del Río is the president of the José Saramago Foundation. This foundation works to protect and spread the ideas and writings of José Saramago. It also promotes culture and human rights.
On May 26, 2017, Pilar del Río received the Luso-Spanish Arts and Culture Prize. This award recognized her important contributions to both Spanish and Portuguese culture. The ceremony took place at the National Library of Spain.
