María del Pilar del Río Sánchez (born March 15, 1950) is a Spanish journalist, writer, and translator. She is well-known for being the wife of the famous Portuguese writer José Saramago, who won the Nobel Prize. Pilar del Río is also the president of the José Saramago Foundation, an organization that keeps his work and ideas alive.

About Pilar del Río
Pilar del Río was born in Castril, a town in Granada, Spain, in 1950. She was the oldest of fifteen children. She started her career as a journalist, working for important Spanish TV channels like TVE and Sevilla's Canal Sur.
Meeting José Saramago
In 1986, Pilar del Río met the Portuguese writer José Saramago. She had read all his books that were translated into Spanish and admired his work greatly. Two years later, in 1988, they got married. They decided to live in Lisbon, Portugal, for a while. Later, in 1993, they moved to Lanzarote, one of the beautiful Spanish Canary Islands.
Pilar del Río lived with José Saramago until he passed away in 2010. During their life together, she also worked as a translator, bringing many of Saramago's books to Spanish readers. After her husband's death, Pilar del Río became a Portuguese citizen.
Her Work Today
Today, Pilar del Río is the president of the José Saramago Foundation. This foundation works to spread José Saramago's ideas and make sure his books are read by many people. On May 26, 2017, she received the Luso-Spanish Arts and Culture Prize. This award recognized her important work in connecting the cultures of Portugal and Spain.
