The Pilgrim River is a beautiful river in Portage Township, Houghton County, Michigan, in the United States. It stretches for about 12.9-mile-long (20.8 km). This river is a great place to explore nature.
The Pilgrim River flows past the Portage Lake Golf Course. It eventually empties into the Keweenaw Waterway. The Keweenaw Waterway is a special channel that connects to the huge Lake Superior.
Protecting the Pilgrim River
In 2010, a group called the Pilgrim River Watershed Project was formed. Their main goal was to protect the river and its surroundings. They wanted to make sure people could still enjoy the river.

The project worked to get easements along the river. An easement is like a special agreement. It allows people to use land for certain things, even if they don't own it. In this case, it helps keep the river open for fun activities.
A Protected Natural Area
Thanks to their efforts, a large area around the river is now protected. This area covers about 1,382 acres (559 ha) of old, tall forests. It includes over 3 miles (5 km) of the river itself. This means the river and its natural beauty will be safe for many years to come.
