Pilton, Edinburgh facts for kids

Pilton is a lively residential area in northern Edinburgh, Scotland. It's located north of Ferry Road, next to Muirhouse on its west side, and close to Granton to its east and south.

Pilton is made up of two main parts: West Pilton and East Pilton. These areas are sometimes seen as part of the larger Granton neighbourhood. Pilton has a rich history and has seen many changes over the years. Like many communities, it has faced challenges, but people are working hard to make it a great place to live.

Homes in West Pilton

Most of West Pilton was built by the city council between the 1930s and 1950s. These homes were originally social housing, but many are now privately owned. You'll find different types of homes here, including maisonettes and three-storey blocks of flats. There are also some taller buildings, like the two 10-storey tower blocks called Inchcolm Court and Inchgarvie Court. Northview Court is even taller, with 16 storeys! New homes are also being built by private companies, and the area is getting a fresh new look. There are also local shops and community services for everyone.

Homes in East Pilton

East Pilton was built in the 1930s on land that used to be East Pilton Farm. A builder from Glasgow named Mactaggart & Mickel constructed these homes. The streets were designed by Edinburgh's City Architect, Ebenezer James MacRae. Many streets in East Pilton have names starting with "Crewe" or "Pilton." The original homes here are often four-in-a-block flatted villas. These are like four separate homes in one building. You can find similar homes built by the same company in other parts of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Newer homes have also been built where an old engineering factory, Bruce Peebles & Co. Ltd., once stood. This factory was destroyed by fire in 1999.

Sports in Pilton

If you love football, you might know that Spartans F.C. are based right here in Pilton! They play their games at Ainslie Park on Pilton Drive. They've been playing there since 2008. Right next to the football ground is a public leisure centre, also called Ainslie Park. Before 2008, Spartans F.C. played at City Park, which was a couple of blocks away. Now, homes have been built where that old stadium used to be.
