What Was the Rosenwald School Program?
The Rosenwald School program was a huge project that helped build thousands of schools for African American children in the Southern United States. This happened during the early 20th century, when schools were segregated, meaning Black and white students went to separate schools. Often, schools for Black children received much less money and had worse facilities.
How the Program Started
The program began thanks to a partnership between Booker T. Washington, a famous educator, and Julius Rosenwald, who was the head of Sears, Roebuck and Company. Washington, who founded the Tuskegee Institute, saw the great need for better schools. Rosenwald, a wealthy businessman, was inspired to help.
Building Schools for Communities
From 1917 to 1932, the Rosenwald Fund provided money to build over 5,300 schools, shops, and teacher homes. These buildings were spread across 15 states. The communities themselves also had to raise money and contribute land or labor. This made the schools a true community effort.
