A Look Back: History of Pine Ridge
Early Days and First Settlers
Pine Ridge has a long history. In 1771, the British government gave out a special permission, called a land grant, for this area. At that time, it was part of a territory known as British West Florida. Many of the first people who settled here came from Scotland.
New Inventions and Churches
One of the very first machines for cleaning cotton, called a cotton gin, was built in Pine Ridge in 1798 by Thomas Wilkins. This was a big deal for farmers.
The Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church moved to this community in 1808. A special building called a session house was built next to the church in 1829. Church leaders used this house to hold meetings and make decisions. A school was also located there until 1904.
This session house is probably the only building of its kind still standing in Mississippi. The church itself is the oldest active Presbyterian church in the state. In the early 1830s, a separate part of the church was created to serve the local African-American community.
The church property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it's recognized as an important historical site. There's also a special marker there that tells about its history.

Plantations and Meetings
The Pine Ridge Plantation was started in the early 1800s by the Pipes family. Plantations were large farms where crops like cotton were grown.
In 1816, the first yearly meeting of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Mississippi happened at the home of William Foster in Pine Ridge.
During the Civil War
During the American Civil War, two groups of soldiers from Pine Ridge joined the fight.
Community Growth
In 1873, a local chapter of the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry was formed in Pine Ridge. This was a group that helped farmers and their families.
