Exploring Vienna Township
Vienna Township is home to a few smaller communities. These are places where people live and gather.
Local Communities
- Farrandville is a small community inside the township. You can find it where Saginaw Road (M-54) meets Farrand and Tuscola Roads. It's just northeast of the town of Clio. This area was named after a person named Ira T. Farrand.
- Pine Run is another small community in the township. It's located where Saginaw Road (M-54) and Vienna Road (M-57) cross. This spot is just east of Clio. The first settlers, Charles McLean and Sylvester Hubbard, arrived near Pine Run Creek in 1833.
A post office called Pine Run opened on January 15, 1836. Charles McLean was its first postmaster. A town was planned and named Vienna. But when the larger area became Vienna Township in 1837, the town's name changed to Pine Run. The post office name changed a few times but was Pine Run again from 1898 to 1905.
A Look at History
Vienna Township has an interesting history, especially with its post offices.
On January 15, 1836, the Pine Run Post Office first opened. Later, on December 26, 1844, it was renamed and moved to Thetford. A new Pine Run Post Office opened on January 26, 1852. Finally, on November 15, 1905, the Pine Run Post Office closed for good.
More recently, on November 27, 2017, Vienna Township and other nearby towns started getting their water from a new source. This water comes from the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline. It is then treated by the Genesee County Drain Commission.
