History of Pinnacles Gallery
Pinnacles Gallery first opened its doors on March 17, 1996. It was originally next to the Thuringowa Library. The mayor of Thuringowa City, Les Tyrell, officially opened it. At that time, a city official said the gallery would be for many different things. It would host both traveling art shows and art from local artists. They wanted it to be a gallery for everyone, not just for a select few.
In its first year, Pinnacles Gallery was very popular. More than 35,000 people visited its 19 exhibitions. A large number of these shows, about 65%, featured art by local artists or community groups.
Moving to a New Home
In 2006, the gallery moved to its current spot. This new home is inside the Riverway Arts Centre. It's the only building in Townsville built just for an art gallery. Moving to this new space gave Pinnacles many more opportunities. The new gallery has lots of modern technology for showing art, including multimedia displays.
Around 2007-2008, the City of Thuringowa and the City of Townsville joined together. During this time, there was a discussion about closing the gallery. However, people in the community worked hard to keep it open, and they succeeded!
Annual Art Exhibitions
Creative Generations Excellence Awards
The Creative Generations Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design is an annual art show. Pinnacles Gallery hosts this exhibition for students from the North Queensland Education District. The artworks are made by older high school students who are studying art for their final school grades. This exhibition also includes art workshops and special programs during school holidays.
ArtNow Exhibition
ArtNow was created to happen at the same time as Creative Generations. It gives students who are not studying art for their final grades a chance to show their work. This exhibition is open every year to older students studying any art-related subject.
