Exploring Thuringowa Central's Geography
Thuringowa Central has a unique shape, like an upside-down letter 'T'. The northern part of the suburb has houses where people live. In the middle and southwest, you'll find commercial buildings and businesses. Along the Ross River in the southeast, there are areas for fun and relaxation.
Two main roads help people get around. Ross River Road goes through the suburb from east to west. Garbutt–Upper Ross Road runs along part of the eastern edge.
A Look at Thuringowa Central's History
The area has a long history, especially with its schools. Ross River Provisional School first opened on April 11, 1881. It closed for a short time but reopened on January 26, 1885. Later, on January 1, it became Ross River State School. Around 1935, its name changed to Weir State School.
Thuringowa Central used to be the main business area for the old City of Thuringowa. This city joined with the nearby City of Townsville in 2008.
When Thuringowa was its own city, many visitors didn't know where its city centre was. So, in 2004, the Mayor of Thuringowa created a plan to develop the city centre. This plan was designed to work well with the Riverway project, which is a popular recreational area.
The Thuringowa Central library first opened its doors in 1986. It was updated and improved in 2016 to better serve the community.
