Where is Douglas Located?

Douglas is bordered on its northern side by the beautiful Ross River. It's about 11.2 kilometers (7 miles) southwest of the main part of Townsville city, known as the CBD.

What's in Douglas?

Even though Douglas is mostly a place where people live, it's also home to some important spots. You'll find James Cook University here, which is a big university. The Townsville University Hospital is also located in Douglas.

The suburb is also known for the Douglas Arterial Road. This is a major road with two lanes going each way. It was the first part of the Townsville Ring Road, which is now part of the Bruce Highway. Another important road, Douglas–Garbutt Road (also called University Road), runs along the northeast side of Douglas.

The History of Douglas

Douglas was officially named on July 1, 1968. It was named after Robert Johnstone Douglas. He was a judge who worked for the Supreme Court of Queensland for many years, from 1923 to 1953.

Growing Community

Douglas has been a growing area. For example, around 2011, there were plans to build more student housing at James Cook University. Also, two new housing areas were being built nearby. This shows how the suburb has been expanding.

New Schools in Douglas

A new school called Enkindle Village School opened in Douglas on February 19, 2019. It started with 17 students from Prep to Year 3 and is located right on the James Cook University campus.
