Mount Stuart is a special area, or "locality," located in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It's a very quiet place, as the 2021 census showed it has "no people or a very low population."

Exploring Mount Stuart's Geography

Mount Stuart is a mountainous area with some interesting natural features. The Ross River flows along its western side. In the southwest, you'll find the Ross River Dam, which creates a large body of water called Lake Ross. This lake forms the southwestern edge of the locality.

The land here is quite hilly, rising up to the peak of Mount Stuart itself. This mountain stands tall at 584 metres (about 1,916 feet) high.

Most of Mount Stuart is used by the Australian Army as a training area. It's located close to the army's Lavarack Barracks. Even though it's called the Douglas Water Treatment Plant, this important facility is actually located within the northwest part of Mount Stuart.

The History Behind the Name

The mountain and the area around it are named after a man named Clarendon Stuart. He was a surveyor, which means he measured land. In 1861, he did the first survey of the Town of Bowen. Later, in 1865, he also surveyed the first land plots in Townsville.

Clarendon Stuart had a varied career. In 1868, he worked in Gympie as a Gold Commissioner, helping manage the gold rush there. He then moved to New South Wales and worked in the office of the Surveyor-General. Before he retired in 1892, he was a clerk and schoolmaster at Bathurst Gaol. Besides his work, he was also a talented amateur artist and held several art shows. He passed away in Sydney in 1912.
