The Pinus devoniana, also known as the Devonian Pine, is a type of conifer tree. It belongs to the Pinaceae family, which includes all pines, spruces, and firs. This tree grows in many parts of Mexico, from Sinaloa in the south to Chiapas. You can also find it in Guatemala.

These trees like to grow in montane (mountainous) areas. They are often found in open forests where other pine trees or oak trees grow. They prefer altitudes between 900 and 2,500 meters (about 2,950 to 8,200 feet) above sea level.

In Mexico, people have special names for Pinus devoniana. They call it “pino blanco” (white pine), “pino lacio” (straight pine), or “pino prieto” (dark pine). It is a medium-sized tree that can grow quite tall. These pines usually reach heights of 20 to 30 meters (about 65 to 98 feet). Their trunks can be 80 to 100 centimeters (about 31 to 39 inches) wide.

The Pinus devoniana has unique features. Its branches have curved twigs. The needles are very long, measuring 25 to 40 centimeters (about 10 to 16 inches). These long needles grow in bundles of five. The cones are also quite large. They can be found alone or in groups of two to four. These cones are often curved and measure 15 to 35 centimeters (about 6 to 14 inches) long. When they open, they can be 8 to 15 centimeters (about 3 to 6 inches) wide.

How Devonian Pines Are Related to Other Trees

The Pinus devoniana is very similar to another pine tree called Pinus montezumae, or the Montezuma pine. Sometimes, it can be hard to tell these two species apart. It is also possible that they can create hybrid trees, which means they can mix their features.

Generally, the Pinus devoniana has larger needles and cones than the Montezuma pine. This helps experts tell them apart.
