The Pioneer Woman sculpture, sometimes called Joy or the Laberee Memorial Fountain, is a beautiful outdoor artwork. It was created in 1956 by an American artist named Frederic Littman. You can find this bronze sculpture and drinking fountain at Council Crest Park in Portland, Oregon.
About the Pioneer Woman Sculpture
The Pioneer Woman sculpture is located at Council Crest Park. This park is on Southwest Fairmont Boulevard in Portland. The artwork is made of bronze. It also works as a drinking fountain.
What the Sculpture Looks Like
The sculpture shows a standing woman. Her hair looks like it is flying behind her. She is holding a baby in her arms. The baby's arms are stretched out.
The sculpture itself is about 10 feet (3 meters) tall. It is 3 feet (1 meter) wide and 3 feet (1 meter) long. It sits on a triangular base made of granite. This base is about 20 inches (51 cm) tall. It is also about 36 inches (91 cm) wide and long.
The granite base rests in the middle of a hexagonal (six-sided) foundation. This foundation is made of concrete and gravel.
Who Made and Donated It
The artist who designed and completed Pioneer Woman was Frederic Littman. His name, "Littman," is carved into the base of the sculpture.
The sculpture was a gift to the City of Portland. It was donated by Florence and George P. Laberee. An inscription on the base says: "This Fountain a Gift / Of Florence and / George P. Laberee".
In 1993, experts from the Smithsonian Institution looked at the sculpture. They said it needed some care to stay in good condition. The City of Portland's Bureau of Parks and Recreation takes care of Pioneer Woman.
