Pipiwai (which is called Pīpīwai in Māori) is a small place in the Te Horo valley. It is located in the Northland region of New Zealand. The city of Whangārei is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) to the southeast. Another town, Titoki, is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) south. Not many jobs are found right in Pipiwai. Because of this, most adults travel to Whangārei or Dargaville for work.

Who Lives in Pipiwai?
Pipiwai is part of a special area used for counting people. This area covers about 124 square kilometers (48 square miles).
In 2018, 234 people lived in this area. This was a big jump from 2013, when only 147 people lived there. It means 87 more people moved to Pipiwai in those five years! There were 75 homes in the area. The number of boys and girls was equal: 117 males and 117 females.
The average age of people in Pipiwai was 35.2 years old. This is a bit younger than the average age for all of New Zealand. About a quarter of the people (57) were under 15 years old. This means Pipiwai has a good number of children and teenagers.
Most people in Pipiwai are either European (Pākehā) or Māori. Many people identify as Māori, making up about 75% of the population. Some people also have Pacific Island backgrounds.
When asked about their beliefs, many people said they had no religion. A large number (46%) were Christian. A small group also followed traditional Māori religious beliefs.
Marae: Important Meeting Places
A Marae is a special and sacred meeting place for Māori people. It is a very important part of Māori culture.
- The local Tau Henare Marae and its meeting house are traditional gathering spots. They are used by the Ngāpuhi groups (called hapū) of Te Orewai and Ngāti Hine.
- The Omauri Marae grounds are also near Pipiwai. This Marae is a meeting place for the Ngāpuhi hapū of Ngā Uri o Puhatahi.
Learning and Schools
Pipiwai has a school and a special learning center for young children.
- Te Horo School is for students from year 1 to year 8. It teaches both boys and girls.
- Years ago, in the 1930s and 1940s, a school called Te Horo Native School was very active in Pipiwai.
- The Tau Henare Marae also runs a kohanga reo. This is a special place where young children learn in the Māori language.

- Taurekareka Henare was a politician. He was part of the New Zealand Reform Party.
- Lani Daniels is a boxing champion. She holds the title of Boxing World heavyweight champion.
