Pirwata is a very tall mountain in the Andes mountain range in Bolivia. It stands at an amazing height of 5,060 meters (about 16,600 feet) above sea level! This makes it one of the highest peaks in the region.

What's in a Name?

The name Pirwata comes from two local languages: Aymara and Quechua. In these languages, pirwa means "granary" or "deposit." A granary is a special building where people store grain, like corn or wheat. The -ta part is a common ending in these languages. So, the name might suggest that the mountain or an area near it was once used for storage.

Where is Pirwata Located?

Pirwata is found in the Cochabamba Department of Bolivia. This department is a part of the central Andes mountains. The mountain sits right on the border between two areas:

  • The Ayopaya Province, specifically in the Morochata Municipality.
  • The Quillacollo Province, in the Quillacollo Municipality.

This means Pirwata is an important landmark that helps mark the boundary between these two parts of the Cochabamba Department.

The Andes Mountains

Pirwata is part of the famous Andes mountain range. The Andes are the longest continental mountain range in the world. They stretch all the way along the western side of South America. These mountains are known for their incredible height, beautiful landscapes, and diverse wildlife. Many high peaks like Pirwata are found here.
