Pitchin is a small place in Clark County, Ohio. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town does.

What is the History of Pitchin?

People first started living permanently in Pitchin in the 1840s. During this time, several houses and shops were built there. In 1854, a sawmill was built in Pitchin. A sawmill is a factory where logs are cut into lumber using powerful saws.

How Did Pitchin Get Its Name?

The name "Pitchin" comes from an old saying, or an idiom, which is "pitch in". This phrase means to join in and help with something. There are two main stories about how the community got its name:

  • One story says that the owner of a mill told people looking for work to "pitch in" and help him build the mill. A mill is a building where grain is ground into flour or other materials are processed.
  • Another story suggests that a store owner invited people to "pitch in" and celebrate with him at his new store.

A post office was opened in Pitchin in 1884. It served the community for many years before closing in 1903.
