Pitkin is a small community located in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, in the United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau identifies for collecting statistics, but it doesn't have its own official city or town government.
Pitkin is about 40 miles (64 km) southeast of Leesville. Leesville is the main town, or "parish seat," for Vernon Parish. Pitkin is also about 45 miles (72 km) southwest of the city of Alexandria.
In 2010, the population of Pitkin was 576 people.
History of Pitkin
In 1863, during the Civil War, soldiers from the Confederate Army built an important military road. This road went from a place called Niblett's Bluff all the way to Alexandria. It passed right through the area where Pitkin is today.
To remember this historical event, the Vernon Parish Tourism Commission placed a special marker in 2009.

According to the 2010 census, 576 people lived in Pitkin. These people lived in 230 different homes. The average age of people living there was about 41.6 years old.
Most of the people in Pitkin are White. There are also people who identify as multiracial, Asian, or other races. A small number of people are African American. About 10 people in Pitkin have a Latino background.
Education in Pitkin
The Vernon Parish School District is in charge of the schools in Pitkin. They run Pitkin High School, which teaches students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.
The community also has a public library. The Vernon Parish Library operates the Pitkin Branch Library, where people can borrow books and use other resources.
Notable People
- Burl Cain grew up in Pitkin. He became well-known as the warden (the person in charge) of the Louisiana State Penitentiary, which is also called Angola.
- James David Cain, Burl's older brother, was born in Pitkin in 1938. He was a politician who served in both parts of the Louisiana State Legislature.
