The Pitt–Devonshire ministry was a government in Great Britain that lasted for a short time. It was led by two important figures: William Pitt the Elder and William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire.

William Pitt was a powerful speaker in the House of Commons, which is like one part of today's Parliament. The Duke of Devonshire was a leader in the House of Lords, the other part. They worked together to run the country from November 1756 to April 1757.

Even though King George II did not like Pitt, Pitt's strong influence meant the King had to appoint him. Pitt became the Southern Secretary, a very important job in the government. The Duke of Devonshire was officially the head of this government.

Understanding the Pitt–Devonshire Government

This government was a team of people who helped run Great Britain. Each person had a special job, like managing money or dealing with other countries. This type of team is called a "ministry" or "cabinet."

Key Roles in the Government

Here are some of the main jobs in the Pitt–Devonshire government:

  • First Lord of the Treasury: This was the most important job, similar to a Prime Minister today. The Duke of Devonshire held this role. He was in charge of the country's money and overall plans.
  • Chancellor of the Exchequer: This person was responsible for the country's finances and taxes. Henry Bilson-Legge held this position first, followed by Lord Mansfield.
  • Secretary of State for the Southern Department: This role was like a foreign minister, dealing with countries in Southern Europe and the American colonies. William Pitt held this very important job.
  • Secretary of State for the Northern Department: This person handled relations with countries in Northern Europe. The Earl of Holderness was in this role.
  • First Lord of the Admiralty: This person was in charge of the Royal Navy, Great Britain's powerful fleet of ships. The Earl Temple held this job, then The Earl of Winchilsea and Nottingham.

These leaders worked together to make decisions for the country. However, this government did not last long. King George II dismissed William Pitt in April 1757, which led to changes in the leadership.
