Piute (pronounced Pie-yoot) was once a small community in Kern County, California. It's now a "former settlement," which means it's like a ghost town – no one lives there anymore. It was also known by names like Pah-ute and Paiute.
Where Was Piute?
Piute was located in a pretty high place! It sat about 5.25 miles (or 1 kilometer) north-northeast of a town called Loraine. Loraine used to be known as Paris. The elevation of Piute was 5016 feet (that's about 1529 meters) above sea level. Imagine living that high up!
A Look at Piute's History
Piute might have been small, but it had a post office! This was important for people living there to send and receive mail. The post office was open for two different periods. First, it operated from 1875 to 1876. Then, it reopened later, serving the community from 1894 until 1918. After 1918, the post office closed for good, and eventually, Piute became a former settlement.
