Place St. Charles is a very tall building located in New Orleans, Louisiana. It stands at 201 St. Charles Avenue in the city's main business area. This huge building is 53 stories high and reaches about 645 feet (197 meters) into the sky.

It was designed in a modern style by Moriyama & Teshima Architects. Place St. Charles is the second-tallest building in both New Orleans and the entire state of Louisiana. It's even taller than Louisiana's highest natural point, Driskill Mountain! Before it was called Place St. Charles, it was known as the Bank One Center and the First NBC Center.

A Look Back: The St. Charles Hotel

Place St. Charles stands on a spot with a lot of history. Before this skyscraper was built, three different hotels stood here, all named the St. Charles Hotel.

The very first St. Charles Hotel was built in 1837. Sadly, it burned down in 1851. A second St. Charles Hotel was built in 1853, but it also burned down in 1894. The third St. Charles Hotel was built in 1896. This one was torn down in 1974 to make way for the building we see today.

What's Inside Place St. Charles?

Place St. Charles is a busy building with many different uses.

  • The first two floors are filled with shops and restaurants.
  • Floors 3 through 13 are used for parking cars.
  • Floors 14 all the way up to 52 are office spaces.

The building is currently owned by St. Charles Place, LLC. Corporate Realty helps to rent out the spaces inside. Place St. Charles is also the main office for the retail banking part of Capital One. Some of the biggest companies that have offices here include Capital One, JPMorgan Chase, Jones Walker LLP, and Energy Partners.

Cool Features of the Building

Place St. Charles opened in 1984. Its outside is covered in strong granite and shiny glass. A special part of its design are the balconies on the lower three floors along St. Charles Avenue. These balconies look like the ones you might see in New Orleans' famous French Quarter.

Inside, the first two floors have about 58,000 square feet (5,388 square meters) of retail space. This includes two restaurants, a food court with 10 different food stations, and a Chase bank branch. The 11 levels of parking can be reached from Gravier Street. There's also a raised walkway that connects the building to a nearby Hampton Inn hotel.

Surviving Hurricane Katrina

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Place St. Charles was one of the major tall buildings in the city that was least damaged by the storm. Because it was not badly hurt, it was able to open its doors again by the middle of October 2005.
