In 1860, the San Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railroad built a station in Placedo. Later, in 1906, another railroad, the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway, crossed the old line. They renamed the station Placedo Junction.

The town of Placedo was officially planned out in 1910. New improvements like sidewalks and gutters were added. By 1920, about 300 people lived there. The community had a bank, a school, and several businesses.

However, a hurricane in 1925 caused a lot of damage to Placedo. The population didn't start to grow again until the mid-1930s. Over the years, the number of people living in Placedo changed. It went from 400 in the 1940s to 220 in 1949. By the mid-1960s, it grew to 480, and then to 515 a decade later. This number stayed about the same until 2000, when an estimated 760 people lived in the community.
