Plainview is a small, quiet place in Meade County, in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council, as a town or city would.
History of Plainview
Plainview was first planned out in 1907. People chose the name "Plainview" because you could see a very clear and open view of the land from this spot.
A post office opened in Plainview in 1908. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years, until it closed in 1972. Today, Plainview is a very small community. It is not listed separately in the official US population counts anymore.
Where is Plainview?
Plainview is located in a very rural part of the Great Plains. It sits where two roads meet: South Dakota Highway 34 and Meade County Highway 39T. This second road is also known as Plainview Road.
Plainview is about halfway between two larger cities in South Dakota. These are Rapid City and Pierre. The area is very open and spread out. There are only two main roads that go through the entire community.
The closest other small community is Howes, South Dakota. The nearest larger town is Sturgis. If you need to fly, the closest airport with regular flights is Rapid City Regional Airport. It is about 71 miles away from Plainview.

Plainview has a type of weather called a "cold semi-arid climate." This means it's usually dry, but not a true desert. It also has cold winters.
The weather in Plainview can change a lot. The hottest temperature ever recorded there was 114 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius). This super hot day happened on July 16, 2006. On the other hand, the coldest temperature ever recorded was a freezing -34 degrees Fahrenheit (-37 degrees Celsius). That very cold day was on December 30, 1990.
Plainview gets some precipitation, which includes rain and snow. The most rain usually falls in late spring and early summer. Winters can bring a good amount of snow.
