Geography of Playalinda Beach
Playalinda Beach is on a special type of land called a barrier island. This island is a thin strip of land that separates the ocean from the mainland. The Indian River is between the island and the mainland.
The Canaveral National Seashore has about 24 miles (39 km) of shoreline. This is the longest part of undeveloped public beach on Florida's east coast. You can drive along about 4 miles (6.4 km) of this beach.
The barrier island is very narrow in some spots, less than 100 yards (91 m) wide. It has a single sand dune, which is a hill of sand. This island is very important because it protects the land behind it from strong tropical storms and hurricanes. It helps to absorb the power of the wind and waves.
