Pniese facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The pniese were special, highly skilled warriors among the Algonquin people in the 1600s. They belonged to tribes like the Pokanoket, who were part of the larger Wampanoag nation in what is now New England.

These warriors were known for their incredible strength and endurance. People believed that a pniese could not be defeated in battle. Their main job was to protect their leader, called a sachem, and to collect important payments or gifts for him from other groups. One famous pniese was Hobbamock, who served the great sachem Massasoit of the Pokanoket tribe.

Who Were the Pniese?

The pniese were more than just regular warriors. They were chosen for their amazing abilities and toughness. It was said they were so strong that they couldn't be killed in a fight. Their role was very important: they acted as bodyguards and advisors to their sachem. They also helped gather resources or "tribute" for their leader, showing his power and influence.

Pniese and Famous Figures

You might have heard of Squanto, a Native American who helped the Pilgrims at Plymouth Plantation. Some stories suggest Squanto might have been a pniese. However, historical accounts differ. Some historians say he was not a pniese, while others imply he might have been chosen for such a role. Both Hobbamock and Squanto were named after important spirits in their culture.

How Did Pniese Train?

Becoming a pniese was extremely difficult and required intense training. It was much tougher than the training for other warriors. Candidates had to learn to ignore pain and develop strong self-control.

For example, they would run through thorny bushes without shoes to toughen their feet and minds. They also practiced fasting, which meant going without food for long periods. This helped them build discipline. After spending a winter alone in the woods, candidates faced a final test. They had to drink a very bitter plant juice, called gentian, until they became sick. They would repeat this process many times to prove their mental and physical strength. This rigorous training prepared them for their vital roles as elite warriors and protectors.
